About this blog

Sometimes it's easier to define things by what they are not, and that's certainly the case with this blog.

This is not an exercise blog, or a weight-loss blog, but I will be talking about those things. This is not a 'mummy' blog, but I have a fairly quirky five-year-old, so no doubt she'll feature occasionally.  This is not a food blog or a vegan blog, but I'll probably talk about those things from time to time. This is not a lesbian blog or a feminist blog, but I'm both of those things too. This is certainly not a craft blog or a gardening blog because I avoid those things like the plague!  This is not a travel blog or a journey blog, but if I go anywhere I'll write about it.  This is not a grammar blog, but I'm pretty passionate about grammar (yes, that's possible!) so it will probably come up sometimes as well.

So what kind of blog is this?  I'm starting it partly as a component of my masters thesis, which is going to look at blogging as a creative writing form.  I don't want it to be solely about that though, and I'm hoping it will have a life beyond study. I guess this is what I'm going to call a 'columnist blog' - like a newspaper columnist I intend to blog about things in my life, in the news and out in the world as they take my fancy.

My genre, if you like, is creative non-fiction, which may sound to the uninitiated (and to my Mum) like an oxymoron but in fact is a well-established (if fairly recent) writing convention. The idea is to write interestingly and creatively about real events, leaving in the 'I'.  Hopefully this makes sense, but if not, just read along and (hopefully), enjoy!

My blogging idol is The Bloggess and I would encourage everyone to read her blog and follow her on Twitter. Tell her I sent you (and she'll be like "who?" but if enough people do it, maybe she'll just assume she knows me, and then I can tell people she and I are friends.)
